In contrast, regions like Australia or the Americas had fewer indigenous plants suitable for large-scale farming. This 'luck of the draw' meant that some societies could produce food surpluses earlier than others. These surpluses supported specialists like kings, soldiers, and bureaucrats who did not have to farm. Consequently, the availability of domesticable flora became a prerequisite for building the foundations of a powerful, technologically advanced state.

The Anna Karenina Principle of Animals

Not all animals are candidates for domestication. Diamond applies the 'Anna Karenina Principle,' stating that domesticable animals must meet several criteria: a docile temperament, a social hierarchy, and the ability to breed in captivity. Eurasia possessed a wealth of 'Big Five' candidates—cows, pigs, horses, sheep, and goats—while Africa and the Americas had very few. These animals provided meat, milk, fertilizer, and, most importantly, mechanical power for plowing and transportation. The lack of such animals in other regions severely limited their agricultural productivity and military capabilities, further widening the developmental gap between different global populations.

The Luck of the Axis

Geography's most subtle influence is the orientation of the continents. Eurasia's primary axis runs East-West, meaning large regions share similar latitudes, climates, and day lengths. This allowed crops, animals, and technologies to spread rapidly across vast distances without needing to adapt to new environmental conditions. Conversely, the North-South axes of the Americas and Africa forced migrating plants and people to cross disparate climate zones, deserts, and mountain ranges. This geographical friction slowed the diffusion of innovations and agricultural practices, ensuring that Eurasian societies remained more interconnected and technologically synchronized than their counterparts in the Southern Hemisphere.

The Lethal Legacy of Livestock

Germs played a decisive role in European conquest. Most major human diseases, such as smallpox, measles, and flu, evolved from viruses found in domestic animals. Because Eurasians lived in close proximity to livestock for millennia, they developed partial genetic immunity through repeated exposure. When Europeans arrived in the Americas and Oceania, they unknowingly brought these 'biological weapons' with them. Since indigenous populations had no prior exposure or immunity, these diseases decimated up to 95 percent of their populations. This invisible carnage cleared the way for European colonization, often proving more effective than any military technology.

The Pen and the Sword

Writing and technology did not emerge randomly; they were products of sedentary, food-surplus societies. Writing evolved to manage complex bureaucracies, track taxes, and record religious texts. Like agriculture, it spread more easily along the East-West axis of Eurasia. Innovations like the printing press, maritime navigation, and advanced weaponry also followed this pattern. While individuals in all societies were inventive, the scale of innovation was limited by the population's size and the availability of resources. Eurasia's large, interconnected populations acted as a massive laboratory for technological advancement, giving them a significant lead in the development of tools for conquest.

The Birth of the State

As populations grew due to successful agriculture, simple tribal structures became insufficient for maintaining order. This led to the rise of 'chiefdoms' and eventually 'states.' These centralized governments could organize large-scale public works, manage irrigation, and maintain standing armies. They also fostered organized religion, which often served to justify the authority of leaders and provide a shared identity among strangers. Societies that reached statehood first were able to mobilize resources and manpower for expansion. The early development of complex political structures gave Eurasian civilizations a decisive advantage in coordinating the colonization and subjugation of less organized groups.

Why Europe and Not China?

Diamond addresses why Europe, rather than the advanced Chinese empire, eventually dominated the globe. China was geographically unified, which allowed for centralized control but also led to 'stagnation' when a single ruler decided to halt maritime exploration. Europe's fragmented geography—defined by rugged mountains and jagged coastlines—fostered a multitude of competing small states. This competition drove constant innovation; if one country ignored a new technology, a neighbor would adopt it to gain an advantage. Therefore, Europe's lack of political unity, ironically, became a catalyst for the rapid technological and military advancements that fueled its global expansion.

Geography as Destiny

In his conclusion, Diamond reiterates that the history of different peoples followed different paths because of differences in their environments, not because of biological differences between the peoples themselves. The distribution of wild plants and animals, the orientation of continental axes, and the resulting spread of germs and technology created a feedback loop of power for some and disadvantage for others.
